Currency In Roatan
Roatan is a cash friendly island - with US dollars and Honduran Lempiras being widely accepted! But there are some tricks to keep in mind:
US Bills Must Be Free From Damage: Bring small, unripped bills for easier transactions, as most vendors won’t accept large denominations or damaged notes. While some places take credit cards, cash is often preferred, especially at smaller shops and markets.
Bring Enough Cash With You: While ATMs are safe to use, they are not always stocked. Especially around the 1st and 15th of the month. You can plan on spending $10 to $20 per person per meal, $4 to $12 for alcoholic beverages, plus however much you’d like to bring for tips.

Being A Responsible Visitor
As an Island, we see firsthand the effects of climate change and pollution on the ecosystem. Here are some ways you can be a responsible visitor, while staying comfortable:
Reef-safe sunscreen is essential to help preserve the world’s second-largest barrier reef. Opt for zinc based sunscreens and avoid harmful ingredients like oxybenzone.
For bug protection, oil-based bug sprays (like citronella or lemongrass oil) are highly effective against sandflies and mosquitoes.
Avoid single-use plastic and bring a reusable water bottle with you. Many of the establishments will be happy to refill your bottle for you!
